MOON JAR FORMING WITH @tamlayo

1. Basics of Wheel Throwing with Larger Amounts of Clay

Participants will learn the basics of wheel throwing with larger amounts of clay that means in particular learning how to center 3–5 kg of clay using the strength of the body. Through this process, participants will learn how to control large amounts of clay with stability and develop the centering skills that are essential in wheel throwing.

2. Transforming a Cylinder into a Jar Form

Participants will learn the process of expanding a cylindrical form into a jar shape.

They will explore the balance and proportions of a jar, practice creating smooth curves, and form a foot ring base that will later be trimmed.

Through this process, participants will learn how to develop a cylindrical form into a jar and understand the techniques required to create a stable jar structure.

3. Moon Jar Forming and Joining Process

Participants will create the upper and lower halves of a moon jar separately.

They will then join the two forms using the traditional joining and paddling process, refine the joined area, and shape the rim of the jar.

Through this process, participants will learn the traditional method of constructing a large jar by joining two forms and develop an understanding of how to adjust and balance the overall shape.

4. Trimming the Foot and Finishing Process

Participants will learn how to trim the foot of the jar.

They will practice the proper use of trimming tools and refine the foot of the moon jar to complete its form and balance.

Through this process, participants will learn how foot trimming helps control the weight and balance of ceramics and how finishing techniques enhance the overall quality of the piece.

THE ART OF BUNCHEONG & INHWAMUN with @wise.pottery

Discovering the Rhythmic Beauty of Korean Stoneware

Join us for an immersive journey into the world of Buncheong, one of Korea’s most expressive and artistic ceramic traditions. Led by an award-winning potter specializing in traditional Korean ceramics, this workshop offers a rare opportunity to master the Inhwamun (Stamping) and Sanggam (Inlay) techniques. Learn how to transform clay surfaces into intricate floral landscapes using artisanal stamps and colored slips.

1. What You Will Learn

The Philosophy of Buncheong: Understand the history and "unfettered beauty" of this 15th-century Korean aesthetic.

Inhwamun Technique: Master the art of creating rhythmic patterns using handmade ceramic stamps.

Sanggam (Inlay) Artistry: Learn the precision of filling recessed patterns with contrasting liquid clays (slips) to create vivid, lasting designs.

Tool Crafting: Sculpt your own unique "Flower Stamps" to carry home as a signature tool for your future work.

2. Workshop Highlights

Tradition Meets Modernity: While rooted in ancient techniques, we will explore the artist’s signature use of varied slip concentrations for a contemporary finish.

Expert Guidance: Benefit from a live demonstration by a master potter recognized for excellence in national wheel-throwing competitions.
